Old Ale

Also known as a "stock ale", this beer was traditionally a malty beer, high in alcohol, that was aged for months or years in vats by the brewery. It was both mixed with mild ales for a gentler flavor or sold as-is for a premium price.

Lying in color between a dark amber or brown, modern versions of this ale are not always aged, but still have a similar flavor profile. Flavor notes include sweet caramel malt and toffee flavors, dark fruit esters, with low to moderate hop aroma and bitterness. Body is generally moderate to full and the moderate to high ABV and flavor profile place the Old Ale somewhere between the Extra Special/Strong Bitter and the English Barleywine.

Best served at cellar temperature, 55-57 degrees, and in a beer snifter, stemmed tulip, or large wine glass.
