I poured the Amstel Light into a glass to see a very faint yellow beer (close to champagne or cider) with a pretty white foamy head which quickly dissolved. Quite a lovely smell of grassy hops and something sweet - not fruity, maybe it's corn sweetness. Taste is a quick dash of bitter hops...and then nothing. It is better than the Macro Beer lagers I've sampled lately in that there is a somewhat hoppy presence in the smell and taste, but the happiness is fleeting. Amstel Light is one of the thinnest beers I've had in a long time.

In all honesty, if I craved a beer and all of my options were Macro Beers and their imported counterparts, I would put Amstel Light near the top of the list of the "lesser evil" for me to order. I think also comparing it to other light beers might also set this further ahead of the pack. If I gotta drink "beer" then 95 calories minimizes the long-term impact of this selection.
