Description:

This is the 39th annual Christmas Ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is sold only from early November to mid–January. The Ale's recipe is different every year—as is the tree on the label—but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons, appears born anew. (Description provided by company)

Pitch black with a thin tan head.

Herbal and earthy hop aromas, meld nicely with a dark chocolate and slightly coffee-like dark malts. A little bit of spiciness as well, adding to the depth of the aroma.

Very smooth and balanced, with just a little bit of an alcohol kick toward the finish. Overall bitterness is fairly low, and the aftertaste is lingering, earthy, and subtle. A little bit thinner than expected, but not watery.

Nice spicy and earthy flavors from the spices and a reasonable bitterness make this 2013 Christmas Ale very drinkable.
