Pours a dark transparent reddish amber along with a nice one finger thick bubbly head. Head doesn't last more than a few seconds, though, so enjoy it while it's there.

Nose is strong on caramel and bready malts, with a subtle earthy hop aroma buried underneath.

Taste is similar, although the malt flavors are nicely balanced between the toasted and caramel malt flavors. Hops are a little more noticeable than they were in the nose, but bitterness is fairly low and hop flavors are more subtle and earthy. Fairly quick aftertaste.

Light body and moderately high carbonation.

Bass claims to be "The World's First Pale Ale". That may or may not be true, but this was likely one of the earlier popular pale ales. Compared to more modern pale ales, the flavor is lower and more subtle than expected, but certainly not bad.
