Description:

Light and sessionable like its namesake, the third release in the Bell’s Planet Series, Mercury: The Winged Messenger, was inspired by the Belgian Single, a style traditionally brewed by monks in Belgium for their own consumption.

This interpretation has bready and grainy notes from Belgian malt, herbal and balanced characteristics from the hops and a subtle, but spicy character from the Belgian yeast. Fruity notes of pear are also present in this light, bright and complex session beer. (Description provided by company)

Pours an almost perfectly transparent golden yellow, with about 3/4 a finger of head.

The nose starts off with a lot of pale malts - crisp and biscuity, but soon the more subtle fruity ester aromas become more prominent. Hop aromas are light and earthy.

The flavors are similar, with a balance of the typical malt and hop flavors and the banana and fruity flavors from a Belgian Ale, although I would have liked more of the ester flavors. The hop flavors are a but stronger than in the nose, but bitterness is low and the aftertaste is pretty quick and dry.

A light body and moderately high carbonation.

Although I might prefer the typical Belgian ale with the stronger ester flavors, this beer does strike a nice balance between a pale ale and a more complex and nuanced Belgian style.
