Description:

A roasty scotch ale with a hint of smoke. Full-bodied, but not overpowering. Smokey, but not in a creepy bar kind of way. Sweet, but not obnoxiously so. Sound like your ideal mother-in-law? Fair enough, but it also is a pretty dead-on description of our Scotch Ale. In a difficult hop-growing climate, Scottish brewers relied on other ingredients to impart flavor and bitterness – one such ingredient was smoked malt. Drafty Kilt is a dark, malty bombshell of a beer. (Description provided by company)

The Drafty Kilt pours a deep brown that is ever so slightly transparent if held up to the light. About one finger's worth of a creamy and slightly tan head from the pour - it sticks around for a couple of minutes, giving you a chance to enjoy it. Smells of primarily of malt with slightly smoky notes as well. Despite being fairly dark in color it is quite easy drinking, with the smokiness of the malt balancing out the bitterness of the hops. Mouth feel is pleasantly smooth, but only slightly thicker than water. Finishes clean with a little lingering taste of smokiness.

When you pour a Drafty Kilt, it has a not-exactly-appealing brownish color to it. At this point, your eyes might be telling your mouth that this beer is going to be a bit watery or tasteless (this is a problem I have with a lot of stouts). Just wait.

This beer smells a bit smoky, a bit sweet, much more full-bodied than it looks. Like comfort food in a glass.

Mouthfeel is just right. Not at all thin or watery, but just enough body to make you feel like you're drinking something important. It isn't heavy though. No one would judge you if you had another later on.

Thankfully, this beer tastes a lot like it smells. You get the sweetness of the malt, tamed by the smokiness of the beer. Well balanced flavors in a beer like this don't come around too often.

I love this beer. It is one of my favorites. If you find yourself gravitating toward dark beers, do yourself a favor and try to get your hands on this one. You won't be sorry.
