Monday Night Brewery's Eye Patch Ale is more than a clever name.
The beer pours a nice copper color, with enough cloudiness to let you know that there are a lot of flavors packed into this drink. The smell of this beer is all hops. I'm a sucker for Cascade hops, and the Eye Patch is not shy with the Cascade hops. It's bright and fresh, with a little bit of citrus and a whole lot of inviting.
The taste picks up right where the smell leaves off too. A fair amount of carbonation bolsters the crisp and light flavors, and a little bit of caramel sweetness smoothes things over. There's just enough of a bitter hop bite at the finish to give the beer a bit of heft. Ultimately, that bite just makes me want to take another sip.
Monday Night's Eye Patch Ale is the first IPA I truly loved. It's a complex, yet well-balanced beer. It opened me up to the world of Indian Pale Ales. For that alone it deserves 4 stars.
