Description:

This is it, the one that started it all. Crafted to perfection for over 200 years, GUINNESS® EXTRA STOUT is descended from the definitive West India Porter known as Extra Superior Porter. Crack it open, and the first sip tastes as fresh as ever. The unmistakeable deep-dark color, the crisp hint of roasted barley, the fresh breeze of hops, and the refreshing bite all make for the bittersweet reward.
Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS®. (Description provided by company)

This just isn't a beer for me despite my growing love for stouts (RIS and Imp stouts, in particular) because the bitterness is too upfront for my liking.

Dark brown to black pour with a tan finger of head that shrank some but never went away. Smells of grain and toffee. Taste had bitter dark chocolate and bitter coffee, but both were upstaged by the bitter burned malt flavor. The bitterness lost some of its bite as the beer warmed more. Instead of serving around 45 degrees, I'd pour it above 50. Mouth feel was nice and full bodied. I have no doubt there are people who love this. I don't.

Pours a deep opaque black. A thick two finger light tan head with lasting retention, and some nice lacing.

Nose is roasted malt along with a subtle sweetness. Roasted malt and coffee carries through in the taste as well, along with a little bit of sweetness upfront. Nice medium full body along with relatively low carbonation - nice and smooth.

Guinness Extra Stout pours a dark brown with a creamy brown head. It smells surprisingly a bit hoppy, but mostly of barley malt goodness. The flavor here is big, with a lot of roasted malts and some bitter bite in the finish. The mouthfeel is full, maybe a little too much. That whole cliche about drinking a Guinness being like eating a loaf of bread is only a little bit true, but it’s enough to make me avoid the beer unless absolutely necessary. It’s fine, just not really what I am looking for 95% of the time.
