Pours a slightly transparent blood red, similar to a dark blush wine. A very light tan head, with nice, strong head retention.

Nose is strong in pine hops, oaky bourbon notes, alcohol, and their are some light caramel and light roasted malt notes. Very strong and assertive, and the woody notes add a nice contrast to the hops and malts.

Bourbon and alcohol flavors come on much stronger in the taste. Strong hop bitterness as well, but the alcohol keeps the aftertaste short and fairly dry. Overall bitterness is quite high. Malt flavors, although strong, are mostly buried. After about half the glass is done, the alcohol and flavors start to overpower everything else, as the beer warms up.

Body is just about what you would get out of a blush wine, while the carbonation is on the low end.

Just like a typical barley wine, this one has some very strong flavors, and the addition of the Bourbon flavors helps to even out some of the stronger bitter hop flavors. If you're a fan of barley wine and bourbon, this might be a nice bottle - if you're unsure, this is probably not going to be for you.
