Description:

A barrel-aged ale brewed with Kentucky-sourced pumpkin, richly spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. As the ale is aged in fresh bourbon barrels, the sweetness of caramel and vanilla are imparted upon the brew and complement its spicier base. A full, foamy, off white head and clear medium amber makes this a nice looking beer.

Lots of pumpkin pie spices and a noticeable amount of the barrel char make for a strange combination. For me, the pumpkin aroma comes on a little but too strong (although not as strong as some others).

Taste wise, it's a slightly different story - the flavors from the barrel (a bit of oak, vanilla, and some char) and the alcohol fruitiness (along with a little bit of an alcohol burn) do a very good job of keeping the pie spices and sweetness well in check. The aftertaste is more of the barrel flavors than the pie flavors, which is actually nice. A medium light body.

While this beer looks great, the combination of the pumpkin and bourbon barrel aromas made me quite leary at first, but the flavor was much better than I expected. The Kentucky Pumpkin Barrel Ale is worth a try if you're tired of the overly-sweet pumpkin beers that are everywhere.
