Looks like a normal pils, but smells and tastes different
Lagunitas Czech-style Pilsner poured into the glass a light gold color with a pearly-white head. The pils smells of fertile earthy hops - a fruitcake or spice cake combination of ginger, peaches, cherries, florals, and ripe bananas. The taste is a blend of fresh bread and cocoa. Both the smell and taste caught me offguard when I compare this experience with the other pilsners I've had. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, but isn't watery, with mild carbonation.
Not the Expected Pils
Pours a clear, very pale straw yellow. A half finger of white head, and lots of bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass.
Nose is malty with lots of pale and bready malts and a very subtle but rich earthy hop aroma.
Malt is equally strong in the taste, with bready and other typical lager flavors quite strong. There is a also a very earthy hop flavor, a little bit like dark chocolate with a lot of spices added, that I wasn't expecting. It does have a fairly long (although not to obtrusive) aftertaste.
A medium light body, and very nicely carbonated.
Lagunitas Pils has all the crispness and pale malt flavors that you expect from this style. The depth of flavor from the hops is unexpected (at least to me), but this does make a nice change of pace from your usual golden-colored lager flavors.
