Description:
Vienna-style beers are among the world’s first light-colored lagers and were on the brink of extinction until American craft brewers helped revive the style; it’s a good thing they did. These delicate and extremely balanced amber beers rely on semi-sweet and bready malt flavors but walk a fine line with both malt and hop character shouldering equal weight. Germans don't slouch on their beer
Sierra Nevada's Vienna is a Vienna style lager. It pours a clear light rust color (nicer looking than it sounds, I promise) and smells of yeasty bread and just the slightest bite of citrus. The flavor is bright and crisp, with some malt heft in the finish that balances it all out really nicely. A full (but not heavy) mouthfeel makes this one a pleasures to drink.
A GOOD Lager!?!
A clear, attractive golden amber with a full two fingers of an off white and foamy head.
Lots of pale and lightly roasted malt aromas - bready, slightly sweet, and rich. The hops are herbal and spicy, and fairly subdued.
The herbal hop flavors are stronger in the taste, but the malt is still pretty assertive and is a very well balanced. A quick finish, and a moderately light body.
The quality of most mass-produced lager beers can vary from boring to slightly less boring, but the Sierra Nevada Vienna means that I now have one exception to that rule.
