Yazoo Shy Rye Porter - Highly Recommended
Shy Rye Porter poured very dark with a little over a finger-width head that left nice lacing on the glass. Yazoo's porter has dark chocolate, plums, and a bit of coffee in the smell. Its taste is mostly bitter dark chocolate with a crisp peppery rye finish. Feels quite smooth with a medium body and just enough carbonation to tickle the tongue in the second half of the gulp. I think this is one of the yummiest porters I've had. I strongly recommend grabbing this when you can.
A Dark Beer With a (Slight) Twist
Pours a totally opaque black with a thin layer of tan head. Very little head retention and no lacing.
Nose is primarily malt aromas, with roasted, chocolate, and some dark fruit. Spicy rye and earthy hops are present, but very low.
The roasted and slightly bitter malt flavors are present up front, and a caramel malt and chocolate-like sweetness balance out nicely. The rye adds a subtle but slight spicy flavor. Hop flavors and bitterness are low, as is overall bitterness. Moderate long finish.
Very thick and full body, with low carbonation.
The Sly Rye Porter, by Yazoo takes a nice English Porter and adds an interesting twist with the rye - although it's not as prominent as some other rye beers. Still, if you like the Porter style, the rye adds a nice extra dimension.
