Pours a deep crimson red, with a full two fingers of a bubbly white head that recedes slowly.

For a winter ale, the hop aromas are quite strong and bright - more reminiscent of an IPA. But there is some nice added depth from some darker malts.

Although the hops are strong in the aroma, the caramel and pale malts come out much more in the taste, providing a nicely balanced (but assertive) flavor. A medium long aftertaste continues the nicely balanced profile. A light alcohol flavor does give a slight warming effect.

A medium body - nicely full without being too syrupy.

Hoppier than I expected a winter ale to be, the strong flavors are well balanced and nicely warming. Southern Tier's Old Man makes a nice beer to drink curled up next to the fire.

Old Man poured a light amber with more of a film than a head. The beer came straight from the cooler at the restaurant, so dunno how much that may have affected this old ale. Smell is dominated by piney hops. The taste is hop resin with nuts, caramel, and some biscuit. Med body and mild carbonation keeps this smooth but not boring.
