There’s no shortage of talented people at Stone, and each makes their presence known in their own unique way. Brian Gallagher, a brewer who learned the art of fermentation in the UK, used the beer you now hold, a take on a traditional English milk stout, as his vehicle for personal expression. Originally brewed as a limited edition offering at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, this coffee-laced milk stout quickly became a favorite among Gallagher’s peers. Made bittersweet and creamy while remaining smooth and easy-drinking thanks to the addition of milk sugar, it’s clear in one sip why this is a brew we needed to share with fans everywhere. Pours a pitch black, dark tan head with moderate retention. Leaves some nice lacing.
Nose is strong on the malt dark roasted malt aromas: coffee, some dark chocolate, along with some earthy hops. Slightly sweeter than expected for a stout, but that's expected for a milk stout.
Taste is very smooth and nicely balanced. The milk sugars add a nice sweetness to counteract some of the roasted malt bitterness, but nothing is overpowering. Hop bitterness is low, and the flavors are mostly earthy and slightly herbal. Some light fruitiness as well, that also helps to add a bit of balance to the roasted flavors. Relatively short and dry aftertaste
A bit lighter body than expected, but not watery or otherwise out of character.
I don't know why, but Milk Stout just sounds like it will be a good beer, and this one definitely is. If you can find it, try it. Even if dark beers aren't your thing.
