Watermelon-flavored beer, not beer-flavored Jolly Rancher
My pint of Straight to Ale's Watermelon Wheat was handed to me by Poppe in their taproom. It was a very pretty, warm gold color with a thumb-thick white head. The foam shrank to a spotty cap and left a little bit of lacing on the glass.
The candy-like watermelon smell is the primary scent, but I don't feel like I've grabbed a watermelon malt liquor or some other glass of watermelon syrup. The watermelon is accompanied by a bit of toffee and grass.
At first, I get a light-fruity bread taste but it is quickly washed over by a tide of watermelon flavor. Thankfully there is a grassy finish that tames the watermelon before it gets cloying. I worried as I started my glass that I would get sick of the flavor at the end. The finish kept this from getting a "fruity beer" label from me.
Nice feel on the tongue with a medium body and mild carbonation.
I kinda wish I had a picnic coming up for me to bring a growler of this to share.
