Evil Twin' Ashtray Heart is a smoked porter. It pours tar-black with a dark but quickly dissipating head. I get a lot of malt in the nose, and certainly some of that smokiness comes through. The flavor is smokey as well, but it's relatively subtle for a beer with a name like "ashtray heart". Lots of body, not a lot of sweetness or hoppiness. Dark dark dark. Whether or not you like this beer really will come down to how much you like smoke. For me, it's an interesting beer, but not one I'd care to try again.

Pours a pitch black with a tan head. A strong head - holds up well and sticks around a while. Pour slower than you normally would!

The smoke and dark roasted malt aromas are strong and pleasant - if you like those kind of aromas. Very woody and oaky with some dark chocolate and coffee bitter aromas.

Taste is similar, with the smoke cutting through the roasted malt bitterness. The burnt flavors do come through more toward the finish, and lead to a very long aftertaste. Although the flavors strong, the bitterness is not overpowering and the smoke and earthy hop flavors do help balance out the dark malts.

A nice medium full body, and the carbonation is slightly higher than expected. For real, pour carefully!

The distinction between a Porter and Stout is nebulous (at least to me), and although the higher ABV and string malt flavors seem more stout-like to me, the balanced flavors do keep this drinkable, although not exactly sessionable. Like dark beers and smoke? Try this one!
