Originally a bartender creation, the traditional Black and Tan is made by carefully pouring a dark beer over a lighter ale or lager. If poured carefully, the dark beer will sit on top of the lighter beer.
Commercially produced Black and Tans are pre-blended and bottled, and usually pour out a light to dark brown. The flavors and aromas depend on the specific beers used, but usually exhibit both the dark roasted malt and floral and citrus hops from the differing styles.
Generally served cool, around 46-54 degrees in a pint glass or beer mug.
