One of the earliest examples of the Russian Imperial Stout in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with vintage aging in mind, as its profile will continue to mature and develop over the years. A huge malt body is matched to a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruits, and other aromas. Intensely bitter in its early months, the flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages. Pours a totally opaque dark brown with a dark tan head. The head has nice lacing and long retention.
Aromatic nose is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. The taste is bitter coffee/chocolate, slight sweetness from malt, and an oaky woodiness. The high alcohol content (10.5 abv) is quite noticeable in the taste. A nice aftertaste is at least partially masked by the alcohol as well. A full body, with low carbonation - feels very smooth on the tongue.
Overall, not as balanced as other stouts in flavor, with the alcohol a little bit too forward in the taste.
