Beer as a velvet painting
Yellowhammer's strong dark Belgian ale has been bourbon-aged, but not beaten to a pulp by the bourbon.
Came out of the tap in Yellowhammer's taproom a smoky caramel with an off-white ring.
Of course the bourbon is the first thing noticed when I smell, but it is quickly followed up by dark fruits and red wine aromas.
Bride of Frankenhammer melds the bourbon a bit more into the mix on the taste. I get more of a fruit cordial flavor; cherries and currants with the bourbon.
Feels lighter than I would expect for a strong ale, My tongue does get nicely coated and I can lick the flavor off of my tongue and mouth for a good bit after I swallow.
One of the better barrel-aged beers I've had in not abusing my nose and tongue with bourbon.
