Description:

Think classic seafaring ports, local pubs and weathered old fishermen. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill, then oak-aged. The result is a strong, rich, malty delight that’s deceptively smooth and drinkable. (Description provided by company)

Pours a cloudy brown, with a half finger of head. Noticeable alcohol legs, and head has very little retention.

Nose is noticeably sweet from the added molasses and the caramel malts. Hop aroma is slightly piney and very subtle. Alcohol is also quite noticeable.

Taste is heavy on the ethanol flavors, as well as fairly strong woody and oak flavors. Sweetness from the molasses is low, as is the caramel malt flavors.

A moderate body and fairly low carbonation. Helps temper the strong and aggressive alcohol.

A complex and aggressive aged oak ale, Founder's Curmudgeon is definitely one that will say "get off my lawn".

Founders Curmudgeon is an old ale brewed with molasses. It pours a cloudy reddish with zero head retention. It smells yeasty and sweet, which I'd expect from the molasses. The flavor is sweet and dry. Lots of power in the 9.8% ABV but it's well balanced. Take your time with this one. It's worth it.

Founders Curmudgeon went into my glass a dark Amber with a thick thumb of a beige head. Molasses and vanilla hit the nose first with a bit of peat. The molasses also pairs nicely with vanilla in flavor with some raisin and caramel rounding it out. Medium bodied with a mild tickle of carbonation.

My primary complaint with aged beers are how the bourbon/whatever almost always dominates everything else. Curmudgeon blends in the complexities instead of covering over the base beer.
