Description:
A heavy malt foundation includes Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat malt to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge, but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. The hop flavors and aromas range from citrus to floral to pine thanks to a delicious blend of hand-selected Chinook and Centennial hops. (Description provided by company)

Not much to be sorry for
Founders’ Dark Penance is an Imperial Black IPA that pours a deep rich chocolate-brown color with a creamy head. The smell is hop-central, with some nutty malt thrown in for good measure. The flavor is intense. There’s a bit of creamy nuttiness going on, but it’s also quite bitter and quite hoppy. I wasn’t a fan on my first taste, but it’s grown on me a bit. I don’t know that I’d order it from a restaurant, but the full and creamy mouthfeel make up for any unnecessary bitterness.
