Description:

We scraped all the hash out of the Yakima hop pelletizers we could get our sticky fingers on to concoct the dankest double IPA out there. The pure hop lupulin, aka “hash” (the resiny stuff), meshes seamlessly with the 2-row, pilsner and wheat malts, allowing it to deliver a pungent punch to the palate. Sweetwater’s Hop Hash Double IPA is serious. It pours a not-so-clear gold with decent, but not crazy, head retention. It smells bright and crisp and citrusy, with major grapefruit notes. And hops. Lots of hops. They aren’t kidding when they describe this beer as “dank”. Even for a DIPA, this beer has quite a lot of hop bitterness. The flavor is fine (if you like hops), and the beer is certainly drinkable. But it’s not my favorite DIPA I’ve ever tasted.

A clear light amber, with a half finger of a bubbly off white head that dissipates into a thin film in about 45 seconds.

The nose is full of typical American hop aromas - citrus, pine resin, along with a strong malt backbone.

The hop flavors are strong, but the bitterness is not as high as expected (at least at first), although the aftertaste is quite long, and so the lingering bitter flavors do tend to add up. Overall, a little but more subdued than I expected a double IPA to be.

A medium full body and moderate carbonation.

The infusion of the hops gives Sweetwater's Hop Hash some strong hop flavor, without the excessive and sometimes overpowering bitterness that is all too common in some Imperial IPAs.
