The Mocha Porter pours a deep, opaque brown with several fingers of a foamy, tan head. The head has very good retention and very nice lacing. A very attractive looking dark beer.
The nose is heavy on chocolate, dark roasted malt, coffee, and subtle vanilla aromas. Taste is similar - a sweeter chocolate like flavor at the front that turns into a more dark chocolate/coffee bitterness toward the finish. Most of the bitterness from coffee and semi-sweet chocolate flavor - very little hoppiness.
Medium body, with moderate to low carbonation gives a nice smooth feeling with a touch of sharpness. A very drinkable chocolate-y dessert beer!
Chugworthy dark beer?
Rogue Mocha Porter poured exceptionally dark. The tan head formed quickly into a multi-finger thickness, but settled down in a couple of minutes, leaving nice lacing on the glass and a foamy film that remained for the rest of the beer. Get more toast and nut upfront on the nose with coffee and chocolate coming in secondarily - like you are taking a bite of toast with some Nutella while holding your coffee inches away so you can quickly get out the door. The taste is all coffee and chocolate with a slight hop finish. This porter was fairly smooth and had a medium body with carbonation that is noticeable but not biting. I was really impressed with Rogue's Mocha Porter and could see myself knocking back a few of these one afternoon.
