Description:

Rugged and resilient, rye has been a staple grain for ages and its spicy black pepper-like flavor has been prized by distillers and brewers for centuries. Rye thrives in the harshest conditions and comes to life in Ruthless, a spicy and rugged IPA with fruity, citrus and herbal hop notes balanced with the dry spiciness of the rye, making the beer aggressive yet comforting to bolster against whatever the winter winds may bring. Pours a transparent deep amber. Lots of head with moderate retention and lacing.

Hops and spices in the nose -hop aromas are citrus with a little pine. Hardly any malt is noticable. Taste is similarly hop centered, pepper spices more obvious in the taste. Peppery taste lingers in aftertaste. The little bit of malt helps to balance out the intense hop flavors, but this is definitely a hoppy IPA. A medium body and moderate high carbonation keep it feeling crisp in the mouth.

Very hoppy - the spices in the aftertaste may be a bit to much, but if you like hops, you should try this beer.

Sierra Nevada’s Ruthless Rye IPA pours a bubbly bronze color with a foamy, creamy head. The nose is really bright and fresh, with grapefruit and hop flavors present. The beer tastes well balanced. The rye is up front and gives way to some decent hop bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is full enough to give the beer some purpose, and certainly isn’t disappointing. I enjoyed it, though I’ve had better rye IPAs (Founder’s Red’s Rye IPA comes to mind).
