Meh, Sam Adams Winter lager
Samuel Adams Winter lager poured a dark amber with a two finger beige head that slowly melted away. Smells of bread and spice. Caramel, biscuit, and a bit of roast malt in the taste. Feels med bodied with a rush of carbonation over the tongue. Seemed rather dull to me.
Good, Not Great
Samuel Adams Winter Lager pours a deep red and a somewhat quickly dissipating head. The nose is a little bit spicy and a lot bit bready, which I like. It’s got some nice malt flavors, and the spices and caramel flavors add a bit of dimension to the beer, but it’s nothing to really write home about. Maybe if it was a bit heftier or had a higher ABV it would balance things out. As it is though, it’s just inoffensive.
Middle of the Road
Dark, but transparent, reddish brown with a full and quickly dissipating off white head.
The nose is a mix of soft wheat aromas and sweeter roasted toffee and caramel malt aromas. The taste has a bit more of both an earthy and herbal hop flavor and a slightly fruity, alcohol finish, although both are well balanced and not too strong. The label mentioned winter spices, but I really couldn't taste much of them.
The wheat gives as nice balance to some of the darker malt flavors, but I don't get a lot of the winter flavors from this beer. It's a mostly average bock.
