Description:

Before Sierra Nevada was a reality, our founders brewed beer at home and dreamed of building a brewery one day. Back then, they brewed the beers they wanted to drink—bold and full of flavor. Stouts had always been a favorite, so when we needed a big and rich beer to test out the brewing system at our fledgling brewery, stout was the obvious choice. Thirty years later, not much has changed. We’re still brewing the beers we want to drink and our classic Stout is the same as it’s ever been—big, rich, bold, black as night and filled with the wild-eyed passion of which dreams are mad (Description provided by company)

Sierra Nevada Stout pours an opaque dark brown/black with two and a half fingers of a light tan head that has excellent retention and strong lacing.

The nose is mostly roast malt, although coffee and chocolate are also noticeable and pleasing. Taste is similar and nicely balanced, with the roasted malt and coffee/chocolate flavors. Hop bitterness is more subtle, but detectable in the dry finish.

Nicely full bodied, with a moderately low amount of carbonation. Has a very creamy or silky feeling in the mouth - very drinkable. This is a good introduction to the American Stout - and widely available!

Decided to give Sierra Nevada's Stout a try since it seems to be one of the more easy-to-find stouts (other than Guinness). Poured it from the bottle to reveal a very dark brew that created a two-finger soda-bubble head that very slowly shrank. Smell was a bit dull, lots of biscuit followed by coffee and toffee. Roast came out in front on the flavor, though. Lots of coffee and chocolate up front and hops come sliding in around the mid-point. As someone who isn't fond of hops, it began to grate on me as I made my way through the glass. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with the tiniest of carbonation, but didn't feel as thick as I tend to expect stouts to feel.

In the end, it's not a bad stout and one that I would grab at the grocery store.
