Description:

Sixty-One captures that tradition in a bottle and marries two Dogfish Head innovations: beer/wine hybrids -- which Dogfish has focused on for well over a decade with beers like Midas Touch and Raison D'être -- and continually-hopped IPAs.

The name Sixty-One is a reminder that this beer is Dogfish Head’s best-selling 60 Minute IPA plus one new ingredient: syrah grape must from California. The label, painted by Sam, is a twist on a typical watercolor. Rather than using water, Sam mixed the green pigment with beer and the red pigment with wine. And because Sixty-One pairs so well with chocolate, he painted the browns on the label with melted chocolate. (Description provided by company)

Pours a transparent reddish amber, with some hints of burgundy. Foamy head that dissipates quickly.

Nose is hoppy, with notes of citrus, pine resin, and fruit. Some subtle malt and definite red wine aroma.

Taste is definitely on the hoppy side, but bitterness is fairly low. Some fruity red wine like flavors. Moderately long aftertaste of hop flavors, but nothing too invasive.

Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth with a touch of crispness.

An interesting twist on a pale ale, and if you were looking to combine some traditional beer flavors with traditional red wine flavors, I would say the Dogfish Head 61 is your go to beer. However, it likely isn't for everyone.

Dogfish Head’s Sixty-One is an IPA brewed with grape must. It pours clear, deep red, almost purple, and a white and foamy head. It has a bright and floral nose. The flavor is, as is typical with lots of dogfish head beers, way hoppy, but the grape must (I guess) sweetens the finish up enough for it to be extremely drinkable.
