As an Irish ale, Smithwick's naturally pours a very deep and clear reddish-amber with two fingers of creamy head. The head has moderate retention and leaves some very attractive lacing.

The nose is subtle, but most malt - caramel and yeast. Taste is mostly malty up front, with a subtle grassy hop bitterness toward the finish. The beer has a medium-light body and moderately low carbonation.

A decent Irish ale, although this beer does feel a bit heavier on the mouth than some of the other Irish ale's that are also widely available. Whether you like that or not is up to you, but if you like a nice Irish ale, give this one a shot!
