Don't fear Vas Deferens!
Dark amber with small off white head. Vas Deferens smells of chocolate and some kind of liquor. Despite the label's mention of orange bitters and blood orange zest, I can't say that I smell or taste orange. Taste is chocolate, caramel, and something bitter. Feels light to med body with little carbonation, to make it easily drinkable.
Don't Let the Name Scare You
Pours a transparent dark brown with half finger of a bubbly head. Head has moderate retention and lacing.
Nose is full of dark malts (chocolate, caramel, and roasted flavors) along with a hint of some floral and citrus hop aromas.
Taste is very malt focused with the chocolate and coffee malt flavors. There is some brightness from the hops, but bitterness is fairly low. The orange additions are very subtle and serve more to balance than to assert their own flavor.
Moderate body and higher than average carbonation.
Don't let the name throw you; Vas Deferens by Caldera is a very nice dessert beer, with strong chocolate and roasted flavors and a fairly low bitterness. If you were looking for a beer brimming with orange flavor, this is not quite it.
