Vertical House black ale (named after Vertical House Records in Huntsville) was as black as vinyl in the glass with a fat thumb of a beige head which melted into a thick film that clung to the glass, leaving sheets of lacing.

Smells of chocolate and moist earth with a bit of citrus and grapefruit peeking in in the second half.

I get dark chocolate and char which adds interest without overemphasizing the bitter. Finishes rather clean considering the dark punch of flavor.

Medium bodied with a smooth feel.

I think I would like to have a side-by-side tasting of Salty Nut's Vertical House with Yellowhammer's Lost Highway.

Vertical House Black Ale is nearly black with a pinky light tan head which melted to a film after a little bit but left ample lacing on the glass. Lots of roasted malt and smoke...maybe I'm hungry, but I also think I smell a hint of steak sauce. Bitterness smoothly slides over my tongue; more coffee than chocolate is mixed with moist soil. I like how the hops merely accentuate the flavor instead of driving it. Medium bodied beer has viscosity and dense flavor to promote small swallows.

Don't ask how, but it's the best black ale I've had to date.
