Description:

Espresso is a drink that is not for the faint of heart. Pulling a perfect shot is as much a science as it is an art form. Come to think of it, the same can be said for brewing beer. Of course, both coffee and beer have certain, shall we say ‘uplifting’ qualities. Combine the two is a natural progression.

Our 2xStout is considered by many to be a perfect milk stout. We started with that in mind, and added espresso beans and lemon peels for a true Italian style pick-me-up. The result is a stout so black, so rich, so creamy, it’d be at home in a café along a cobblestone street in some neighborhood in Rome. Yet, it’s beer. (Description provided by company)

Southern Tier's Espresso 2X is a double milk stout brewed with espresso and lemon peel. It pours a deep brown with a creamy light brown head. The smell is mostly coffee and nutty goodness. Nothing from the lemon peel on the front end. That comes in the flavor, but only in the slightly dry finish.

Pours a pitch black with a fairly thin light tan head.

Nose is rich, with a lot of caramel and roasted malt aromas. Chocolate, roasted coffee, dark fruit, some bright citrus, and some alcohol aromas are all present.

The taste has similar depth of flavors, although the roasted coffee and dark chocolate bitterness and flavors are especially strong. The finish brings in more of the dark fruit and ethanol flavors, and the aftertaste is long but not overly strong or distracting.

Although this beer has a medium body, I expected something a little fuller and smoother. The body plus the carbonation makes it a little too prickly in the mouth.

The Southern Tier 2X Presso is strong, with a lot of depth of flavors and aroma. Unfortunately, the carbonation and its body are just a little too light for my taste.
