During the walking tour of the brewery, the tour guide would pull growlers of beer from his cooler and pour us samples into the souvenir glass which we received at the start of the tour. The first sample was Dos Perros, the second sample was Yazoo's Pale Ale, and finally we were poured a sample of their hefeweizen.
The tour group was gathered by the taps and moved past the restrooms, out a door, down the outside wall by about 10 feet, and then back through a door into the brewery area. The space wasn't climate controlled, so our hot, muggy day followed us during the tour. Our guide soon provided everyone with a 5oz stemmed snifter for sampling. He had a rolling cooler at his feet and pulled out a growler. The first sample was Dos Perros amber. As the group sipped their sample, the guide gave us a history lesson of Yazoo. We heard how Yazoo was started by an engineer at local tire plant who homebrewed. They started commercial brewing in the old Marathon Motors building and moved to larger facility in The Gulch in recent years. Once the history lesson was done, we got a quick sniff of two types of grains and hops (fresh and pellets).
We moved to the various tanks and were provided our second sample - their pale ale. This portion of the tour focused mostly on the brewing process and some of the brewing and fermenting tanks. Next we shifted to the other side of the tanks and were poured a sample of Yazoo's hefeweizen. We got to hear about the bottle and draft packaging. A collection of bombers could be seen sitting atop the cinderblock walls in this area of the brewery. These bottles were traded with other brewers which the brewmasters at Yazoo had visited or those brewers had visited Yazoo. The tour moved over to the bottling line and wrapped up our tour.
It ended up being a 45 minute tour of about 20-25 people in our group.
There was a food truck parked outside. Beer and souvenirs were available for sale. Yazoo has a roomy tap room with patio seating that is great for waiting around beforehand or chilling out after the tour. The tap room does have windows which look into the brewery. If the food truck doesn't float your boat, there are numerous restaurants just a couple of blocks away to the west.
